Apple WiFi Access on Campus

There are a couple of issues with the Apple Macintosh relative to WiFi access on campus. One issue seems to be that Macs are not quite as patient as some other mobile devices when waiting for a response from the wireless network that it has been authenticated. This affects both the Wingate-GuestT and the Wingate-User networks. Here the best solution is to find the strongest signal possible for the network you wish to use.

A second issue involves not the Macintosh itself but the Safari browser. In order to use the WINGATE-WiFi network, not only must a mobile device be allowed to join the network but a user must log on. The implementation of the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) used for Safari is not entirely compatible with Wingate’s network. To complicate matter, Safari does not give users the option of bypassing OCSP. There is a work-around to this problem.

  • Download and install Mozilla Firefox for the Macintosh
  • Go to Firefox>Options > Advanced > Encryption>Validation and uncheck the OCSP option
Uncheck OCSP box
